Quote
“Do the thing you fear, and the death of fear is certain”
-Emerson

My Thoughts
This quote certainly rang true for me all of last week. I spent last week dropping in on companies. What do I mean by that? Well, I did some basic research on a company and then I showed up at their location with no appointment and asked to speak with the CEO. Sounds so simple, but certainly not an easy task.

I woke up on Monday morning feeling very nervous at the task that lay ahead of me. I was set to go to five companies. Five places I had never been before and meet with the CEOs. Immediately excuses started filling my head: I didn't sleep enough, it's too cold, I need more practice, etc...But I pushed them aside and left on my journey.
As I was standing outside of the first place, the nervousness really kicked in and then came negativity. Thoughts of: this will never work, I was crazy to believe in this idea, I will be laughed out of the building, etc...I stood there staring at my future, the only thing holding me back was myself. I knew I had to go through with it. I knew the experience would make me grow. So up the stairs I went and walked right into the office. Interestingly enough my nervousness left me after I started talking. So, last week I repeated that scenario 16 more times. Each time it became easier and easier. Tomorrow I will do it 3-5 times.

Are fears holding you back from achieving your dreams? If so, ask yourself are those fears based on reality or are they imaginary? Usually you will find they are imaginary. Facing your fears will cause you to grow.

So if some fear is holding you back I challenge you to do the thing you fear. Once you conquer it you will find a strength inside of you. A strength that has always been there but perhaps has been dormant for years.

Have an amazing week and a great holiday.

5/3/1 Update

I realized I haven't updated the workout portion of this in a while. I've been making really solid progress on Wendler's 5/3/1 program. I highly recommend this program to anyone that is looking to make improvements on the core lifts or if you just want to try a new routine.

I've changed up my benching form. Because I am tall with long arms I used to bench slightly wider to make the rep range shorter. I've since learned the hard way that this is bad for your shoulders in the long run. I now bench with a fairly close grip so the amount I can bench has dropped a bit, however it is going back up. Basically all of last year I was unable to lift heavy do to a shoulder injury, but now my shoulder feels great.

I haven't made too much progress gaining weight but I am not overly concerned with it at the moment. My overall body weight goal is to maintain 220lbs at 10-12% body fat. I would guess that right now I am between 13-15%.

Here are my current stats:
Age: 30 Height: 6' (183cm) Body Weight: 212-215lbs (97-98kgs)

Here are my lifting bests(these were done at a body weight of 230-235lbs [104-107kgs]):
Flat Barbell Bench Press: 315lbs
Incline Barbell Bench Press: 275lbs
Deadlift: 495lbs
Rack Pull (3rd pin): 550lbs
Olympic Squat: 335lbs<-basically feet are closer together and you go all the way to the floor.
Standing Military Press: 155-165<--not too sure about this and may have used leg drive

Here are my last three workouts:
Monday
Week 3 Military Press
Standing Military Press: 100x5, 110x3, 135x2.5*
Dips: 10(+44lb plate), 10(+44lbs), 8(+44lbs), 8(+44lbs), 8(+88lbs/rep PR)
Close Neutral Grip Pullups: 10, 6(+33lb plate), 6(+33lbs), 6(+33lbs), 14
Close Grip Bench Press: 110x15<--just testing it out/still slightly painful on my shoulder
*Done strict, no pushing with the legs.

Tuesday
Week 3 Rack Pull changed to Deadlift
Deads: 260x5, 310x5, 310x6, 220x15<--just seeing where things are at*
Good Mornings: 40x10, 60x10, 85x8, 85x8, 85x8
Hanging Leg Raise (Wendler Style): 8, 6, 5, 5, 5

*Someone was using the rack so I had to switch to deadlifts. I haven't done deadlifts in about two months because I tweaked my lower back. Everything felt fine.

Thursday
Week 3 Incline Barbell Bench
Incline Barbell Bench Press: 150x5, 175x3, 195x2*
Flat Dumbbell(DB) Bench Press: 60x10, 75x6, 85x5, 90x8(Rep PR?), 60x16
Hammer Strength MTS Row (total weight listed): 180x10, 220x6, 245x5, 265x5, 220x10
DB Hammer Curl:60x8(Rep PR)

*I could of done 3-4 reps but I messed up on the first rep. It was a beginner mistake, I lowered the bar way to high...almost to my neck. It was a good learning experience.

All of these workouts went great.

Until next time...

Vision

News

Quote
A vision without a task is but a dream.
A task without vision is but drudgery.
A vision with a task is the hope of the world.
-Unknown

My Thoughts
This seemingly simple quote offers us a lot of valuable insight.
Many people have a vision, but have no action associated with that vision. They may say "I want more money.", "I want a better body.", or "I want to be more confident." And that is all they say. They rarely, if ever, take action so all those statements are but a wish.

Just taking action without having a vision is monotonous and will eventually lead to failure. This explains why many employees dislike work. They are doing tasks but don't really know why they are doing them. This also helps explain why people fail at other things as well, such as going to the gym. People try to force themselves to go without having a vision, or one that is not clear enough.

Now, having a clear vision of what you would like to be, do, and/or have combined with action will allow you to not only change your life but impact the lives of many other people as well.
How?
One of our friends/client is a Korean woman that has earned over a 1 million dollars by following her vision. No she didn't come from a good family, she didn't have a fantastic education, and she certainly wasn't lucky. I don't have time to go into the whole story, you can hear it if you come to some of our seminars, but the point is she pulled herself out of massive debt (800,000,000 won) to earning over 1 million dollars (1.1 billion won) by having a clear vision and taking action. Has her path been easy? No not at all. Did she have to go out and get uncomfortable to achieve her dream? Absolutely.
The action she took has inspired not only her friends but also her employees. By the way many of those employees thought that it would be impossible to do this, but she sent them to our coaching courses and eventually they believed in her vision.

So what can you do?
If you are one of those people sitting around now wishing something would change but not taking action, then I recommend asking yourself "What action can I take in this situation?", or "What control do I have in this situation?". You may also want to clarify your vision.
If you are one of the people attempting to take action with no vision, then I recommend you stop and ask yourself "What do I really want?" Be specific and then take action.
If you are one of the people that has a vision and is taking action, then I commend you. If you are finding it hard to continue taking action, then I encourage you to think from the end. This will allow you to shift your focus from the problems that you may be facing and allow you to start seeing solutions.

Have an amazing week.

"An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching"

-Gandhi

My Thoughts

Perhaps the best example I can think of is actually a story about Gandhi:

A mother was concerned about how much sugar her son was eating; She tried to make him stop eating sugar but nothing worked. Incredibly frustrated with her son she finally decided she would take him to see Gandhi and ask for his help. She walked for hour and hours under the scorching sun to visit him. She asked Gandhi if he would tell her son to stop eating sugar. Gandhi replied come back next week. The mother was perplexed but she did as Gandhi instructed. The following week the mother and son returned and Gandhi told the son to stop eating sugar. The mother asked Gandhi, “This was a very arduous journey for us to come to see you, why couldn’t you have told my son last week to stop eating sugar?” Gandhi replied, “Last week I was eating sugar, this week I gave it up.”

If you would like other people to change then you must first change. Telling or yelling will not work and may make the situation worse. Asking or attempting to get the other person to see your point of view usually won't work either. If you would like someone to be a better communicator, you must first become a better communicator. If you would like someone to start getting in shape, you must first get in shape. If you would like someone to pursue their passion, you must first pursue your passion.

The point here is you have to lead by example and also not judge others for you were probably once in their shoes.

Have a great week.

Quote

"Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change."

-Dr. Wayne Dyer

My Thoughts

Sometimes you may find yourself getting caught up in negativity. Once you start focusing on the negative you start to see the world negatively. This creates a cycle that can be difficult to break. For example: Let's suppose that you dislike your job and one day you start complaining about your job. The next thing you know you are complaining about your coworkers and your boss. From there it keeps growing. Then you find yourself complaining about the bus driver, people on the subway, the waitress, the coffee, the food, and on and on it goes.

So what can you do about this? How can you get out of it?

The first thing is you need to become aware of your thoughts. Most people simply don't realize exactly how negative they are. After you become aware of your thoughts, you have the power to change your thinking. You need to start focusing on what is good around you. I recommend finding things that you are grateful for.

Finally, remember you can't always control what situations you find yourself in but you can control your reaction to those situations. You could ask "Why me?" but that probably won't get you very far and will start up the blame cycle. Instead ask yourself "What can I do in this situation?" or "What control do I have?". This will help you start seeing other potential options that you wouldn’t have seen if you kept focusing on the negative.

Have a wonderful week.

Quote
"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."
-Ellen Goodman

My Thoughts
People often look at their lives and determine their potential by their past results. We have all done it from time to time. The problem with doing this is that it will severly limit you. Your past results are merely a reflection of what you have been thinking up until this point and time. You have the ability to change your thinking whenever you choose. The only limit to your potential is what you say it is.

Another clue in how people limit themselves is in the goals they set, or in many cases don't set. Many people set New Year's resolutions. How many people actually follow through with them? Not many. Why is that? Well most people don't put any worthwhile effort into setting these resolutions. The other thing is that there is not enough emotion tied to the resolutions.

Here are some common resolutions:

-Lose Weight

-Be Happy

-Organize my life

-Learn something new

-Quit Smoking

All of those are limiting. I won't go into all the reasons but mainly because they are not specific and not emotional.

What is my recommendation? Stop setting New Year's resolutions. That's right. Think about it, if you've been setting resolutions for the past 15 years and have never followed through you have yourself a 15 year old habit taking up space in your subconscious mind. Quit reinforcing that habit.

Instead of a list of meaningless resolutions, I offer you a different challenge.

Spend some time contemplating this question:

If I absolutely knew I would not fail, what is one thing I would do?

After you have the answer to that question spend more time thinking of what you can do right now to move you closer to to achieving it and then start taking action.

Have an outstanding week.
