Story


One day while walking through the wilderness a man stumbled upon a vicious tiger. He ran but soon came to the edge of a high cliff. Desperate to save himself, he climbed down a vine and dangled over the fatal precipice.

As he hung there, two mice appeared from a hole in the cliff and began gnawing on the vine.

Suddenly, he noticed on the vine a plump wild strawberry. He plucked it and popped it in his mouth. It was incredibly delicious!

I encourage you to spend some time pondering it's meaning.

Fearing Death

There is still space available for the Self-Image Workshop on Saturday, April 7th. It will be from 11:30am - 1:00pm at The Wolfhound Pub in Itaewon.

This will be the last workshop that I will be conducting this year in Korea. I have had some changes in my life recently and I will have to leave Korea for some period of time (more on that in a future message).

We have ten people paid and attending so far so it is a great way to meet people that are making positive changes in their lives.
For those that have said they are going but have not paid yet, remember the discount ends tomorrow night (the 26th)
If you pay by Monday evening the fee for the workshop is only 10,000 won. If you wait, the fee will be 20,000 won. If you pay the day of the event it is 25,000 won.

My Thoughts
Sometimes we get caught up in thinking we have all the time in the world so this can lead us to put off making decisions. We also tend to worry about what others think of us, and we fear failing. All of these things slow down our decision making ability.

We will all die. That is the only real guarantee in life. It's not something to be sad about. Once you embrace death and realize that your time here is finite it can help you see what really matters most. Once you know what really matters most then it becomes much easier to make decisions.

I lost my Mom when I was 13 years old. It completely shattered my worldview at the time. The biggest lesson that I learned from that was time is limited so don't waste it. If you know what you want in life, go and pursue it.

I have tried my best to follow this over the last twenty years. It hasn't always been easy, but it has provided me with much meaning.

I encourage all of you that are putting off making big decisions to really look inside and see what is preventing you from making those decisions.

Mind Like a Child

My Thoughts
When you want to try something new do you think of all the reasons you can't do it? Or do you think of the reasons why you can? Many people tend to think of why something won't work and then usually give up before ever trying. Yet we weren't always this way. Most people when they were younger believed anything was possible.

I'll share a story with you.

Over the past week, I was fortunate enough to work with a lot of children. They were aged between 6-13. I've never really worked with children before so it was a new experience for me. Most of the younger children were so full of energy and enthusiasm. So many of them were smiling and laughing. It was so great to see. They were curious and asked a lot of questions. They freely shared their dreams of wanting to be athletes, astronauts, doctors, lawyers, etc.. and nobody in the room laughed at them. It was beautiful.

We often forget that we were all once like them. We could be anything we wanted. Then somewhere along the way, we ended up becoming conditioned. People start judging us and we start judging others, we may even make fun of their hopes and dreams.

Imagine if you had the fearlessness of a child. Imagine if you had the curiosity of a child. What would you be doing differently?

I encourage everyone this week to try and open your mind. Attempt to experience life as though you were a child.

Banishing a Ghost

Instead of a quote and my thoughts this week, I wanted to share this Zen story with you. I suggest you spend some time this week pondering it's meaning.

Story
The wife of a man became very sick. On her deathbed, she said to him, "I love you so much! I don't want to leave you, and I don't want you to betray me. Promise that you will not see any other women once I die, or I will come back to haunt you."

For several months after her death, the husband did avoid other women, but then he met someone and fell in love. On the night that they were engaged to be married, the ghost of his former wife appeared to him. She blamed him for not keeping the promise, and every night thereafter she returned to taunt him. The ghost would remind him of everything that transpired between him and his fiancee that day, even to the point of repeating, word for word, their conversations. It upset him so badly that he couldn't sleep at all.

Desperate, he sought the advice of a Zen master who lived near the village. "This is a very clever ghost," the master said upon hearing the man's story. "It is!" replied the man. "She remembers every detail of what I say and do. It knows everything!" The master smiled, "You should admire such a ghost, but I will tell you what to do the next time you see it."

That night the ghost returned. The man responded just as the master had advised. "You are such a wise ghost," the man said, "You know that I can hide nothing from you. If you can answer me one question, I will break off the engagement and remain single for the rest of my life." "Ask your question," the ghost replied. The man scooped up a handful of beans from a large bag on the floor, "Tell me exactly how many beans there are in my hand."

At that moment the ghost disappeared and never returned.

My Thoughts
A small dose of fear can be a good thing because it can temporarily heighten your awareness and also allow you to learn things about yourself. However, when the fear is constant it can produce many negative consequences.

Fears cause us to act irrational. It blocks our ability to reason properly. A simple example of this is when someone has a phobia. I have (although it's become much better recently) a fear of spiders. It doesn't matter the size of the spider or if it's poisonous or not. So if a spider started crawling on me as I was typing this I would act very irrational. In the past I'd probably jump up and run around screaming even though logically I know the spider poses no harm to me.

We can see fear causing problems in every area of life: relationships, business, financial, health, etc..

Another example of this is someone that absolutely hates their job. The person complains every chance they get about how bad their job is. Yet, they take no action to either resolve their perception of the situation and/or move on. Why don't they move on? It stems from fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of judgment, etc..

Three years ago when I started my own business I too had to face all those fears. However, I can tell you that all my experiences over the last three years have made me grow tremendously. Has it been easy? Not at all. But it's definitely been worth it.

I encourage all of you to use this week to become more aware of your fears and see what steps you can take in order to start overcoming them. I also recommend spending some time reflecting on the quote above.

Living in the Moment

My Thoughts
Living in the present can certainly be a challenge. Most people are either stuck in the past or worrying about the future.....or both. But the more you live in the present moment you will find your stress levels drop and you will realize true happiness.

A common question I get asked is how can I live in the present moment and still set goals? A few years ago this was a question that I struggled with myself. I'll share my current understanding with you.

I have goals in different areas of my life but I'll use a financial one as an example. As a business owner my only source of income comes from my business. With that being said the burden of responsibility is on me to generate my own income every month. If, for whatever reason, I fail to generate income for that month then I don't receive any money. Think about that for a moment I could put in 60-80 hours a week for a month and I may not receive any monetary compensation. I tell you this to illustrate the point that it could be a source of serious stress.

So, every month I have a financial goal that I work towards and I have an overall yearly financial goal. I do all the goal setting techniques that I've mentioned before: I set the goal and date it, I read it aloud at least twice a day with emotion (saying it in the present tense), etc..But I do my best to live in the present moment. How? I just keep taking action and I don't worry about the goal. If I can truly be in the moment then I will be devoting myself 100% to whatever action I happen to be taking at that moment. If I am devoting myself 100% to that action then the action will be much more effective. If I can continue to take much more effective action then it will have a much greater impact on my future.

Of course it is not always easy to remain in the present moment and I have certainly not mastered it yet. Meditation is what really helped me with this.

I encourage you this week to try to live in the moment, even if you can only do it for a few minutes each day. Like all things this is a habit that will take time to develop.

Facing Fear

My Thoughts
This quote certainly rang true for me all of last week. I spent last week dropping in on companies. What do I mean by that? Well, I did some basic research on a company and then I showed up at their location with no appointment and asked to speak with the CEO. Sounds so simple, but certainly not an easy task.

I woke up on Monday morning feeling very nervous at the task that lay ahead of me. I was set to go to five companies. Five places I had never been before and meet with the CEOs. Immediately excuses started filling my head: I didn't sleep enough, it's too cold, I need more practice, etc...But I pushed them aside and left on my journey.
As I was standing outside of the first place, the nervousness really kicked in and then came negativity. Thoughts of: this will never work, I was crazy to believe in this idea, I will be laughed out of the building, etc...I stood there staring at my future, the only thing holding me back was myself. I knew I had to go through with it. I knew the experience would make me grow. So up the stairs I went and walked right into the office. Interestingly enough my nervousness left me after I started talking. So, last week I repeated that scenario 16 more times. Each time it became easier and easier. Tomorrow I will do it 3-5 times.

Are fears holding you back from achieving your dreams? If so, ask yourself are those fears based on reality or are they imaginary? Usually you will find they are imaginary. Facing your fears will cause you to grow.

So if some fear is holding you back I challenge you to do the thing you fear. Once you conquer it you will find a strength inside of you. A strength that has always been there but perhaps has been dormant for years.

Fears

I've decided that I will start posting news updates for One Amazing Life in here as well.

News
I've decided to change things around a bit. The mastermind course will be postponed.
Instead I am going to offer a six week professional speaking course.
It will start Wednesday, November 10th at 7:30pm and finish on Wednesday, December 15th.
Each class will last for two hours.

For those that are not familiar with my speaking background, here is some information:
-My two year coaching certification included training in professional speaking from two professional speakers certified through the Bill Gove speech workshop. This is the best school to attend if you want to become a professional speaker.
-I have prepared and conducted numerous 1-4 hour seminars/workshops for individuals, companies, universities, etc..
-I currently teach a Presentation Skills course to Korea University's Executive MBA program.
-I also teach professional speaking/presentation skills to a VP and a CMO at two of Korea's largest companies.
-I placed first out of a field of 50 in a presentation competition done for the US Army.

Some benefits of attending this course:
-Build self confidence and greatly reduce your fear of speaking in public.
-Learn how to prepare content and connect with any audience.
-Increased leadership skills.
-Understand how to effectively deliver you message.
-Potential to get promoted in whatever field you are in.

I am also a member of Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a great way to bring your public speaking level up to a competent level and I highly encourage you to visit a meeting sometime. I am a member of KH Toastmasters here in Korea. You can check out their website here:

However, Toastmasters can only take you so far. This course takes you to a whole different level.
My normal fee for this is a minimum of 100,000 won an hour. In this case this course would normally run 1,200,000 won.
However, I want to make this as accessible as possible to everyone so the entire 12 hour course will cost only 300,000 won. That is a savings of 75%.
I am also limiting the group size to eight people.
By the way, you do not have to have any experience in public speaking to attend this course.

How to connect with the four different types of people found in any audience.<--This will also help you at work, in relationships, with friends, etc..
What happens if you don't connect with these people.
Examples of how to do an unscripted speech.
Each student delivers a very short unprepared speech.

My Thoughts
Many times people get so caught up in fearful thinking that it paralyzes their ability to move forward and make progress. Of course there are many types of fear, but I think fear of poverty really clouds many people thinking. It keeps people working at jobs they dislike for years and years hoping that one day luck will somehow find them and they will be rich or at least doing something they like.

Fear can inhibit our ability to reason properly. For example: I have a fear of spiders. Now I know logically that a non-poisonous spider will do no harm to me. However, if a spider were crawling up my arm I would run out of the room, screaming like a little child. Of course this is a very unreasonable reaction.

The same thing happens when you have a fear of poverty, or a fear of what others may say, or a fear of failure. You actually talk yourself into staying at a job you dislike doing work that you hate for a boss you can't stand. And the funny thing is you think it's reasonable.

What do I recommend?

Stop focusing on the fear and start focusing on what you want to do. What inspires you? What are you passionate about? As Steve Jobs said back in 2008 (paraphrased) "If you were going to die today would you be doing what your about to do?".
I am not saying it's easy to follow your heart, but I guarantee you will feel more alive.

Risk

My Thoughts
What Roosevelt is talking about here is risk. When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone and took a risk? For most people it has been way too long. It's interesting that when we were young we took a lot of risks. Examples include: learning to walk, learning to ride a bike, asking someone out on a date, etc... However, as we get older we tend not to take as many risks. Two major reasons for this include the fear of failure, and the fear of criticism. We have been conditioned to believe that risk is negative or that we should avoid it at all times.

In order to grow you have to learn to take risks. In doing so you will live a much more fulfilling life. Also, you won't be one of the vast majority of people that look back on their life and wonder "what if...?". Remember you will encounter obstacles outside the safety of your comfort zone. This is where perception comes to your aid. I recommend using your perception and look at these obstacles as opportunities for growth.

I encourage all of you to take risks. Step outside of your comfort zone and grow.

How can you do this?
Here are some examples:

1. Join Toastmasters.
2. Consider attending the Bill Gove Speech Workshop (or other acclaimed speech workshops in your area).

Are you passionate about something and would love to turn it into your full time career?
1. Start researching (find any info you can regarding your passion, read books/magazines, etc..)
2. Get in contact with people that can assist you:
a. Certified Life Coaches (like myself).
b. Mentors
c. Business Consultants

I would like to remind you, usually, the greater the risk you take the greater the reward.

Fear

My Thoughts
Fear is a very common thing, especially when we are attempting to make a change in our life. Usually, the bigger the change, the greater the fear. This fear can, at times, seem overwhelming. Many people let this stop them, they give up before even trying.
The greatest way to conquer your fear is to face it. One other thing to realize is that all of us make mistakes. It's learning from those mistakes that allows us to grow. I encourage all of you to face your fears, learn from your mistakes, and live your life.

Fear

What keeps holding us back from doing what we truly want to do, what keeps preventing us from what we truly want to become? Well besides the fact that we don't believe in ourselves it is also fear. The two main fears we face are fear of failure and fear of criticism.

So often, we don't go after what we want because we don't actually believe we are capable of attaining it. Instead of even trying we just give up, "What's the use?" we usually say to ourselves.
Another thing we love to do, is go around and get everyone's opinions about things that we want to be, do or have. The funny thing is usually the person you are talking to has no experience regarding the advice you are seeking.

I want you to really sit down and think about "What do I want to do?", "What do I want to be?", "What do I want to have?". I mean really give those questions some thought and write down your answers. When you are finished don't go running around asking everyone their opinions, instead start off in the direction of your dreams.
