Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

I hope that it is off to a great start.

Quote
“Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!”
-William Arthur Ward

My Thoughts
I like to spend some time reflecting on New Year's eve or day about the year that has passed and the year that is coming.

What have I learned? Where have I grown? What areas of my life could use some work? What is my intention for this year?

I also take time to forgive myself (or at least try to). Could I grow in more areas, or could I have handled situations differently? Of course.
But it's very important to remember that you did your best at the time. Try to learn the lesson that life is giving and move on, there is no need to constantly beat yourself up over the past.
Similarly, worrying about the future is a futile activity. Generally speaking the vast majority of our fears and worries will never come to pass. And even if some of them do, you can't really do anything about them now.

I set my intention for the year and try to use that as my guidepost. Personally, I like to have an overall intention and set intentions in multiple areas of my life (business, finance, education, etc...) and I use them as guideposts as well.

Remember though, sometimes we get too focused on goals and we lose sight of what's most important. This is why I like to use them as markers and if for some reason I should miss that mark, I evaluate what happened.

I really have learned that life is about the journey not the destination.

I wish you all the best in 2012.

Have an amazing week.

Muddy Water

News
No new updates for this week.

Instead of sharing a quote and my thoughts this week, I wanted to share a story.

Story
Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers.. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there.”

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid.

The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!”
So he came back and told Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.” After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake.

This time too he found that the lake was muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same. After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said,” See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be…. and the mud settled down on its own – and you got clear water. Your mind is also like that! When it is disturbed, just let it be.

Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.

Have an incredible week.

Living in the Moment

No new updates for this week.

My Thoughts
Living in the present can certainly be a challenge. Most people are either stuck in the past or worrying about the future.....or both. But the more you live in the present moment you will find your stress levels drop and you will realize true happiness.

A common question I get asked is how can I live in the present moment and still set goals? A few years ago this was a question that I struggled with myself. I'll share my current understanding with you.

I have goals in different areas of my life but I'll use a financial one as an example. As a business owner my only source of income comes from my business. With that being said the burden of responsibility is on me to generate my own income every month. If, for whatever reason, I fail to generate income for that month then I don't receive any money. Think about that for a moment I could put in 60-80 hours a week for a month and I may not receive any monetary compensation. I tell you this to illustrate the point that it could be a source of serious stress.

So, every month I have a financial goal that I work towards and I have an overall yearly financial goal. I do all the goal setting techniques that I've mentioned before: I set the goal and date it, I read it aloud at least twice a day with emotion (saying it in the present tense), etc..But I do my best to live in the present moment. How? I just keep taking action and I don't worry about the goal. If I can truly be in the moment then I will be devoting myself 100% to whatever action I happen to be taking at that moment. If I am devoting myself 100% to that action then the action will be much more effective. If I can continue to take much more effective action then it will have a much greater impact on my future.

Of course it is not always easy to remain in the present moment and I have certainly not mastered it yet. Meditation is what really helped me with this.

I encourage you this week to try to live in the moment, even if you can only do it for a few minutes each day. Like all things this is a habit that will take time to develop.

Have a great week.
