Saved by a Fish

News
No new updates for this week.

Instead of sharing a quote and my thoughts this week, I'd like to share a story I read on Paulo Coelho's blog.
I encourage you to spend time reflecting on the meaning of this story.

Story
Nasrudin is walking past a cave when he sees a yogi, deep in meditation, and he asks the yogi what he is searching for. The yogi says:

‘I study the animals and have learned many lessons from them that can transform a man’s life.’

‘A fish once saved my life,’ Nasrudin replies. ‘If you teach me everything you know, I will tell you how it happened.’

The Yogi is astonished; only a holy man could be saved by a fish. And he decides to teach Nasrudin everything he knows.

When he has finished, he says to Nasrudin:

‘Now that I have taught you everything, I would be proud to know how a fish saved your life.’

‘Very simple,’ says Nasrudin, ‘I was almost dying of hunger when I caught it and, thanks to that fish, I had enough food for three days.’

My Thoughts
I've recently received a few emails from people that are feeling down and unhappy. So I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts on dealing with times when you are feeling down.

It helps to remember that we all go through cycles. Sometimes we are feeling great and at other times we feel lost and hopeless. It's a natural part of life. In our down moments we are offered the opportunity to learn more about ourselves. We can ask what is the source of this unhappiness? And if we are willing to be honest and explore our inner selves a bit we can often work through issues and grow. I find that meditation has really helped me over the last two years. It really allows us to become aware of our thoughts and feelings. I know that's not an easy task, but it is certainly worthwhile.

Secondly, you can put things in perspective. If you've been focusing on what you don't have, focus on what you do have. Spend ten minutes writing down what you are grateful for. You can also ask yourself how bad is my situation really? Compared to (the homeless person I see everyday, the person that just lost their family, etc...) how bad is my situation? You can also read inspirational books and articles about people that have dealt with struggle and came out on top.

Lastly, It helps to remember that life offers us lessons. Sometimes (or maybe most times) they don't come up at convenient times, and we may not want to learn whatever the lesson is. If you are a spiritual person I recommend praying for guidance, strength, patience, and understanding.

Remember you are never given a burden that you can not handle.

Have an awesome week.

Let it Be

News
No new updates for this week.

Quote

My Thoughts
Those three words are perhaps probably the hardest to live by. It can be very difficult in times of struggle and heartache to just let it be. And yet the struggles we go through are what we need to become stronger and wiser. They shape us.

In the midst of struggling it can be very hard to accept that this what is needed for our growth. Many people may not want to learn the lesson from that struggle at that moment in time so they turn away and try to find something to ease their pain. Of course in coaching, we would say something like stop using the word struggle and replace it with something positive like growth opportunity. And that is sound advice for most of life's challenges. But what about when something hurts so deep it cuts through to the core of your being? Simply trying to rephrase it as a growth opportunity is not so easy.

For example: When my Mom died at 13 it changed my world view and I felt very lost for some time. Trying to shift perception from struggle to opportunity would have been incredibly difficult in the few days following her death. Not impossible of course just difficult. Just letting it be, letting time go by helped. It eventually made me stronger and helped me deal with the numerous challenges I faced as I grew older.

For all of you struggling with life's challenges at the moment, I suggest you do your best to let it be. Eventually you will see light at the end of the tunnel. Later you will realize it was beneficial for your growth and be grateful for it.

Have an outstanding week.

A Painful Lesson

Happy New Year, and I hope it is off to a great start.

I wanted to share a story with all of you that I believe shows how oftentimes we have to go through some difficult circumstances in pursuit of our goal.

A few days ago I was working out in the gym. When I started the workout I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't exactly sure what it was. Something just felt off. I chose to ignore the feeling and continue on with my workout.
I almost always finish my back workout with deadlifts, however I kept getting this feeling that I shouldn't do them.
Once again I ignored the feeling. This turned out to be a very painful mistake.

During my final set of deadlifts, I pulled the bar up to my knees when I suddenly felt and heard a pop from my lower back. I dropped the bar and fell back. Interestingly enough, I pulled my lower back muscle last December during my final set of deadlifts. This time it was also a pulled lower back muscle (and possibly a herniated disc).

As I was laying there wondering what went wrong a trainer came up to me. He asked me if I was okay, and after that proceeded to lecture me on why I shouldn't lift heavy, why I shouldn't work out too hard. Eventually I managed to get up, and go home, although I wore a weight belt for the rest of the day. The pain was fairly intense the first night and the next morning but, now I am feeling much better.

What are the lessons from this story?

1. Trust your intuition. I should have listened to my intuition, and not done the deadlifts. While in pursuit of any goal your intuition will guide you to what is right, and what is wrong.
2. Everyone has opinions. The trainer's lecture will not stop me from attaining my deadlifting goals. As you pursue your goals people will tell you that you can't do it or that you shouldn't do it. Only you can decide what you can and can not do.
3. Persistence. As I said last December I pulled my lower back muscle. I was chasing after a deadlift goal of 495lbs. About three months after that injury I hit my 495lb deadlift goal. I will come back from this injury stronger than ever. We all encounter obstacles and set backs on the way to achieving our goals. I look at them as tests, testing our desire. How bad do we really want whatever it is that we are going after? Do not let those obstacles and set backs stop you from achieving your dream.

Until next time....
